Automotive experts explain the warning signs drivers shouldn’t ignore as Pep Boys offers free towing throughout October

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 6, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — When a warning light comes on, a strange noise starts, or something simply doesn’t feel right behind the wheel, drivers face an important question: Is it safe to keep driving?

Continuing to drive a vehicle with certain mechanical problems can turn a manageable repair into a more expensive one—or create a serious safety risk. Pep Boys, a leading automotive service provider, is helping drivers recognize the warning signs that mean it’s time to pull over and have the vehicle professionally inspected rather than trying to make it to a repair shop on their own.

To make that decision easier, Pep Boys is offering free towing throughout October, covering the first 10 miles of a tow to a Pep Boys service center.

“Drivers sometimes assume that if their vehicle is still moving, they can make it a few more miles to a repair shop, but that isn’t always the safest choice,” said Ken Lichty, ASE Certified Master Technician and Technical Trainer at Pep Boys. “Certain warning signs can indicate a problem that may get significantly worse if you continue driving. Knowing when to safely pull over and call for a tow can help protect you, your vehicle, and others on the road.”

7 Signs You Should Stop Driving Your Vehicle

1. Your engine is overheating
A temperature gauge in the red, an overheating warning light, or steam coming from under the hood can indicate a serious cooling-system problem. Continuing to drive an overheating vehicle can cause severe engine damage. Safely pull over, turn off the engine, and arrange for a tow.

2. You’re experiencing brake problems
A soft or sinking brake pedal, reduced braking power, grinding noises, or other changes in braking performance should never be ignored. If you suspect your brakes are failing or cannot safely stop the vehicle, do not continue driving.

3. Your vehicle is losing power or behaving unpredictably
Sudden loss of power, difficulty accelerating, unexpected shifting, or other changes in how the vehicle responds can signal engine, transmission, or other mechanical problems. If the check engine light on the dashboard is blinking off and on, this can indicate that your car’s on-board computer system detected an active fault and further driving could lead to more extensive and expensive repairs. If the vehicle cannot be operated normally and safely, pull over and have it towed.

4. You see a fluid leak
Engine oil, coolant, transmission fluid and brake fluid all play critical roles in keeping a vehicle operating safely. A substantial or sudden leak can lead to mechanical failure, further damage, or an unsafe condition. If you notice fluid rapidly pooling beneath your vehicle or a leak accompanied by warning lights or changes in performance, don’t keep driving.

5. Your tire is flat or damaged
Tire damage including a flat tire, sidewall damage, exposed cords or a sidewall bulge can make a vehicle difficult to control and increase the risk of tire failure. If you cannot safely install a spare tire, or the vehicle does not have one, call for a tow rather than attempting to drive on the damaged tire.

6. You see smoke or smell something burning
Smoke from under the hood or a burning smell can indicate overheating, leaking fluids, electrical problems or other potential serious issues. Pull over in a safe location, turn off the vehicle, and seek professional assistance rather than continuing to drive.

7. Your vehicle has been damaged in an accident
Even when a vehicle appears drivable after a collision, damage to the steering, suspension, wheels, tires or other components may make it unsafe to operate. If there is any question about the vehicle’s condition following an accident, have it inspected before getting back on the road.

When in Doubt, Don’t Risk the Drive

Not every dashboard light, unusual sound, or vehicle issue requires a tow. But when a problem affects others’ safety or a driver’s ability to safely steer, stop, or control the vehicle—or continuing to operate it could cause damage—the safer choice is always to pull over and seek professional help.

Drivers should move their vehicle to a safe location as soon as possible, turn on their hazard lights, and avoid standing near traffic while waiting for assistance.
